What’s taking up space on my Mac?

MacAid’s Storage Atlas measures accessible folders in your home directory and turns their sizes into a visual disk map. Unlike a cleanup shortlist, it shows where measured space goes, including files you may want to keep. Select a folder to explore deeper, then use the breadcrumb trail to move back up.

01

Three ways to see your storage.

Switch between Treemap, Sunburst, and Icicle views. Larger areas represent more measured space, making your biggest folders easier to spot.

02

Large files. Older files. A clearer picture.

Storage insights list large files and show a breakdown by file type. Age insights help you review older files. A file’s age or size does not mean it should be deleted.

03

Know what grew since last time.

Scan comparisons, part of MacAid Pro, show which measured folders grew or shrank. Automatic scans are opt-in and read-only, and run only while MacAid or its menu-bar item is running and your Mac is on mains power. They never clean anything.

From insight to a clear choice

A simple place to start.

  1. 1

    Measure your home folder

Open Storage Atlas and choose “Measure my home folder.” Follow the progress or cancel without moving any files.

  2. 2

    Explore the map

Choose a view, open a large folder, and use the breadcrumbs to understand where its space goes.

  3. 3

    Decide what needs attention

Review your findings before opening a separate cleanup flow. Measuring storage does not select files for removal.

A map is a starting point, not a deletion list.

Storage Atlas starts with your home folder, not every volume connected to your Mac. Protected or inaccessible locations can limit coverage, and drilling into folders has practical limits. Full Disk Access can expand visibility; it never gives AI permission to delete files. An incomplete measurement should not be treated as a complete disk total.

How MacAid handles your data

A little more clarity.

Do I need a plan for the storage analyzer?

No. Home-folder measurement, the three chart views, and folder drill-down work without a plan. Scan comparisons, automatic scans and AI explanations are part of MacAid Pro. Try it free for 14 days, with no card required.

Does measuring my home folder change any files?

No. Measurement reads folder sizes locally. It does not move files, remove anything, or send your file inventory to AI.

Why can the map differ from macOS Storage?

The Atlas measures accessible content within your home folder. macOS Storage describes the broader volume, including system content and storage accounting that is outside that measurement. Permission limits and incomplete scans can also affect the result.
