How does MacAid find duplicate files?

MacAid identifies byte-identical files locally and groups the matches for review. You can see the original being kept and the paths of the additional copies. Nothing in the duplicate group is selected for removal on your behalf.

01

An exact match means exact.

Matching file contents matter, not just matching names. This is an exact-duplicate finder, not a tool for choosing between similar-looking photos or different edits of a document.

02

Context before cleanup.

Review the file paths to understand why multiple copies exist. A copy in another project, backup, or shared folder may still serve a purpose.

03

Your files stay local.

Duplicate discovery runs on your Mac. Optional AI guidance does not receive file names, paths, contents, or file hashes, and cannot select copies for deletion.

From insight to a clear choice

A simple place to start.

  1. 1

    Run a storage scan

Scan a folder in MacAid and review the duplicate findings when the scan completes.

  2. 2

    Compare the locations

Check the original and the extra copies. Keep any copy you need, even if its contents are identical.

  3. 3

    Review your cleanup choice

Choose eligible copies yourself and review the plan before cleanup. Trash is the default destination. Moving copies is part of MacAid Pro.

A duplicate can still be useful.

Identical content alone is not a reason to remove a file. Backups and project copies can be intentional. Local safety checks still determine cleanup eligibility. Items can be restored only while they remain in Trash; emptying Trash or choosing permanent cleanup cannot be undone.

How MacAid handles your data

A little more clarity.

Can MacAid find duplicate photos?

It can identify photo files with identical contents as exact duplicates. It does not claim to recognize similar photos, alternate crops, near-matches, or different versions of an image.

Will MacAid automatically delete duplicates?

No. You review the group, choose eligible copies, and approve the cleanup plan. AI cannot make that selection or remove files for you.

Do I need MacAid Pro to find duplicates?

No. Finding and reviewing exact duplicates works without a plan. Moving the copies you choose to Trash is part of MacAid Pro. Try it free for 14 days, with no card required. AI explanations never skip your review. If you used MacAid before the current terms took effect, cleanup stays free for you.
